Get to know the team: Liam Martin
Liam Martin, one of rhi’s youngest Quantity Surveyors (QS), based in Aberdeen loves learning about the latest advancements in technology and has done so since he was a young boy. So, when the opportunity came about to work with rhi as a QS came up, he jumped at the chance. Now into is second year with rhi, Liam is using his passion for technology and his background in Quantity Surveying, to excel in the data management space. We reached out to Liam to learn about his time with rhi and what excites him most of rhi’s future.
Can you tell us more about your career with rhi?
In 2021, I graduated from Robert Gordons University with a Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying and secured a job in the construction industry. I was then approached by rhi and given its reputation within the Oil and Gas industry and the opportunities that were arising in energy transition, I was eager to join the team.
My first role was on the Tengizchevroil’s (TCO) project in Kazakhstan, working with the UK measure team which involved the measure and billing of the many components.
After a few months I progressed to heading the data collection task, collating as many pieces as of relevant data as possible from the TCO project. Primarily the rates and quantities which could then be compared over the lifetime of the project.
What I found particularly rewarding about the role is that the data can be used in any future projects as a reference to help indicate how items should be priced, how rates change from the bid stages of the project and all the way through to contract award. This makes our offering even more compelling to our clients.
What excites you about your future with rhi?
rhi is in a really strong position with a lot of opportunities presenting themselves across the energy industry, which is exciting to someone in the early stages of their career. We have a strong global presence, showcasing success on a range of diverse projects and personally I am eager to see where that success can take me in my career. The work that has been done on TCO has been so positively received and has ensured our successful reputation for being the leader in project services continues within the industry.
At rhi we are really passionate about our values; Care, Commitment, Courage and Our behaviours (Listen Up, Lift others up, stand up, team up, speak up, don’t give up). What resonates most with you?
I really resonate with “courage and “don’t give up” especially given the circumstances we have found ourselves in over the past three years (global pandemic and the emerging energy trilemma). You will always face some sort of adversity in life and at times things won’t be easy; so, find solutions learn from them and move on.
Describe how you’ve grown professionally since you started working for us?
I understand the oil and gas industry in much greater depth and detail and have developed my skill set - especially my proficiency in excel which has improved drastically.
Through the data collection exercise where we are streamlining processes to allow for increased productivity, I have been able to use my experience to provide more in-depth knowledge to our clients. The data collection process has also allowed me to understand how substantial projects such as TCO are, and what is involved with the process from start to finish with a project of that magnitude.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
I enjoy going to the gym and spending time with family and friends however my real passion lies with cars, video games and technology - I am fascinated with anything to do with technology and how it is ever adapting.
Any advice you have for someone who is looking to further their career?
Keep striving towards your goals and jump at any opportunities that come your way. As humans we excel when we challenge ourselves and push ourselves outside of that comfort zone.
You don’t know what you can achieve unless you try. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because when you truly understand something, it is much more valuable.
