2022

Sector:

Mining & Minerals

Scope

The team supported a Mining & Minerals client quantify the “cradle-to-gate” CO2eq emissions resulting from the production of:

  • Nickel, Manganese, and Cobalt (NMC)
  • Lithium

Each lifecycle analysis (LCA) for both products accounted for the extraction, transportation, processing, and delivery to customer for use in the production of batteries for electric vehicles.

Services

Two quantitative LCA studies evaluated the Scope 1, 2 and significant sources of Scope 3 CO2eq emissions from the respective value chains of NMC and Lithium.

The scope of each LCA study extended from the mining and processing of Ore to Concentrate in Australia, the transport of Concentrate to Yanbu Industrial City and the processing facilities required for the synthesis of the final products in Yanbu Industrial City, Saudi Arabia.

Both LCAs were developed in compliance with the Global Battery Alliance Greenhouse Gas Rulebook.

Value Added

The LCAs enabled the client to better understand the magnitude of associated emissions and act, where practicable, to decarbonise the process; positioning the client as a global leader in the production of high-purity chemicals.

The client was provided with the necessary data to support the request of external stakeholders including upstream supply chain OEMs.
